Appearance:

Whilst not 'pretty' in any accepted sense of the word, she is attractive, with strong, slightly hawkish features, a full mouth,  and
pronounced eye ridges. Her hair is very long and she normally wears it loose, or tied back into a simple ponytail where the occasion demands it (such as on duty or during physical exercise).  Extremely tall for a Cardassian woman, she carries her height well and has a good  figure which she likes to show off.  She tends to wear elegant, fitted clothes,  with a preference for dark colours and slightly exotic fabrics.

Psychological evaluation:

She is normally very disciplined, and can be coldly logical and  practical, but becomes extremely passionate or violent when roused. She tends to make 'snap judgements' about people, although she does not let it affect her duties.  She claims that her family situation (see below)  has not affected her psychologically, and acts as though it has not, although it is unlikely to be entirely true. She is not particularly traditional, finds plenty to appreciate in other cultures, and has little sympathy for the TRI viewpoint.  She can be quite hedonistic, appreciating fine food and drink, and enjoys the company of the opposite sex although she is not really interested in a long-term relationship. She is extremely loyal to her people, and firmly believes that Cardassia is (or should be) the pre-eminent power of the Alpha Quadrant; she believes that the alliance with the Dominion was an opportunity to achieve this  that could not have been turned down.

Places of education:

Educated on Bajor until the Occupation ended in 2369, when her parents were deported back to Prime by the new Bajoran government After that, she was educated at a minor school on Prime, before winning a scholarship to the University of Cardassia to study political and military history. She proved to be an avid student and following the completion of her initial studies at the age of 22, she embarked on a two- year postgraduate course on Alien cultures and languages. Her studies have now been cut short by her decision to join the Military.

Background:

Born on Bajor to parents who had been settled there for quite a number of years. There was no tradition of military service in her family, but she had wanted to join up from childhood having been fascinated by tales of conquest and the exploits of  famous military leaders . Her father taught history and politics to the children of expatriate Cardassian settlers, and her mother acted as the chief doctor (although without military rank) to an army base. Both parents were distraught when they were forced to leave Bajor following the end of the Occupation, having grown to regard the planet as home.

Carlima announced her intention to join the army (and thereby make something of her life, unlike the rest of her family as she saw it) shortly after returning to Prime, and was promptly forbidden from doing so by her family who wanted her to follow her father into teaching.  She seemed to become a model student, obtaining a scholarship to the University of Cardassia, and in fact thoroughly enjoyed  her studies.  She was however completely unprepared for what came next and was halfway through the final year of her postgraduate course when the Dominion/Cardassian Alliance was formed by Gul Dukat.  Amongst many political prisoners and suspected anti-government activists taken into custody was her mother; it transpired that she had been suspected of treason for years, but only now had enough evidence come to light to secure a conviction. Iit turned out that during the occupation her mother had been the lover of Gul Torell, the commander of the army base which she served as chief doctor;  and that she had passed on military secrets learned both as a consequence of  this affair and during the normal course of her job, to the Bajoran terrorist militia. The entire family  was lucky to escape imprisonment as accessories to the treason. Carlima was profoundly
shocked by this; although she had been aware that her parents had some sympathy for the Bajorans, she had never dreamed that they would have stooped to this. Her decision to join the military now became not merely a desire for personal advancement, but a way of making up for the appalling actions of her mother. She broke off all contact with her parents, as she refused to believe her father had no knowledge of her mother's treasonous acts, and  terminated her studies to apply for entry to the Army.

Special talents

As a result of her studies, her main talent is her linguistic abilities. She is fluent in Bajoran and Terran, and also speaks reasonable Klingon, Romulan and Ferengi. She is well versed in the political and military histories of not only Cardassia, but also the above cultures and has studied the main tenets (and peculiarities) of alien cultures extensively.  She has also made studies of alien military strategies. A highly intelligent woman, she is capable of thinking extremely quickly 'on her feet' and has excellent memory and recall skills.

Reasons for joining the military

To fulfil her childhood ambitions: to 'make a name' for herself: and to try and make up for her mother's crimes against the State.
